The folks at Fly Fish Food must be on the same wavelength as The Black Gnats, cause just like them we’re all about the midge patterns this month. (Have you seen our Instagram feed?) Check out some of the great posts and tying videos going down over at their site.

In the meantime, we wanted to highlight another great, simple midge pattern this week – the Mercury Midge. Absolutely dead simple to tie. A bead, some thread and wire – doesn’t get much simpler than that. The beauty here is in the details. It takes a bit of skill to tie at sizes as small as #22 and #24, but when done right this pattern can be personally gratifying (and deadly to winter trout).

Tim at Tightlines Productions does another perfect job with this tying video. There are some great tips to be had as well, including mashing the barb for the bead, the dubbing wax trick and especially the technique for making a tapered body look so good. Check it out.

Tight lines!
